Welcome to the initial segment of Solar Energy System Design Through solar panel PV System Software. In this module, we will delve deeper into solar resource than the Solar Energy Basics course. This will involve a more detailed examination of the characteristics of sunlight and the transformations it undergoes during its journey from the Sun to the Earth's surface.
We will now explore the circuits and electrical attributes of modules and arrays. In Solar Energy Basics, you utilized module spec sheets to compute power using voltage and current. In this module, you will revisit those module specifications, examining how the various voltage and current values play a crucial role in determining the module's operation under diverse conditions. Lastly, we will scrutinize the design of both the internal circuitry of modules and the circuitry of arrays of modules.
In Solar Energy Basics, you computed photovoltaic system sizes and outputs based on available insolation, assuming optimal array conditions. However, on-site conditions often lead to deviations from the ideal design for capturing all available insolation. Factors such as fixed roof angles, directional constraints, and shading from nearby trees can impact array efficiency. In this module, you will learn how to factor in different sources of losses in insolation. Understanding these variations is crucial during the early planning stages of a PV system.
In the concluding content module of the course, you will focus on equipment selection and system sizing. The previous modules covering array siting, irradiance variability, temperature effects, shading losses, and circuit design will all be relevant when designing a system. Additionally, you will delve into site surveying, where information is gathered, and permitting, where data is recorded and communicated along with the proposed system design.
The culminating project of this course will involve applying much of what you have learned. You will design a PV system using commercially available components and calculate its output under site-specific conditions. Accounting for solar radiation availability and losses due to array positioning and shading will be essential. Additionally, you will need to devise an optimal configuration to connect the PV modules with an inverter. Finally, you will evaluate a PV system design for both accuracy and safety.
